About Thomas Mengesha
A military veteran with a fascinating and multifaceted career, Thomas Mengesha has accumulated expertise and experience in a variety of fields. After signing on with the United States Army in 1983, Mengesha completed several tours of duty during his 25-year career with the United States Army Reserve, including two years spent in a combat zone in Iraq. He served as Deputy Director of the $500 million United States Central Command Rest & Recuperation Leave Program, where he assisted in creating and implementing policies to support the program and reduce negative systemic aspects. Thomas Mengesha earned a number of medals for his exemplary service, such as the RECONDO badge and the Global War on Terrorism Medal (Service). As a serviceman, Captain Thomas Mengesha had the opportunity to meet and interact with many notable people, including comedian Sheryl Underwood, Admiral Mike Mullen, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and actress Scarlett Johansson.
In addition to his military service, Thomas Mengesha earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Public Administration from The University of Akron. Mengesha also received his Juris Doctor from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1998 and now runs The Mengesha Firm, PC, where he provides many legal services, but specializes in sports and entertainment law, family law, and trust and estate planning. In addition to legal work, Thomas Mengesha pursues a number of active interests in other areas. Recently, he took on a position as Adjunct Professor of business law and business ethics with American InterContinental University online. Thomas Mengesha is also the self-published author of The Service Member's Guide to Deployment: What Every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, and Marine Should Know Prior to Being Deployed, a book in which he identifies important steps for military servicemen and their families to take in preparation, details of the process to help demystify it, and government programs that benefit the families of deployed soldiers, among other topics.
Currently, Thomas Mengesha serves as the Causality Assistance Coordinator at The United States Department of Veterans Affairs in Michigan. In his spare time, he enjoys horseback riding, boxing, and sailing. He keeps an active blog at thomasmengesha.blogspot.com.
